Why Isn’t My Air Conditioner Working?

Common air conditioner issues

We always start with the most obvious problems first:
- Is your thermostat set to “cool?”
- Are your batteries running low?
Next, check these other quick fixes:
- Does your air conditioner appear to have power?
- Has your breaker tripped?
**Note: if you have a blown fuse or tripped breaker, you have a bigger issue that requires professional inspection.
Your fan runs for air conditioning in the summer too, because the AC and Furnace are interconnected.
The filter needs regular changing as usual and this should be checked to prevent freeze ups of the AC.
If you can hear your air conditioner running (and it’s not making strange sounds), check the following:
- Are your vents or heat registers closed?
- Are they blocked by something?
- Make sure your furnace fan is running. It may have failed and requires a service call
Debris and dirt can cause havoc for your air conditioner unit, so ask the following:
- When was your last air duct cleaning?
- Is there debris in/around your outdoor AC unit? (If so, cleaning it can be a great place to start.)
If you notice water leaks, have a blown fuse or tripped breaker or none of the other issues here apply, it’s time to call for help.
